GO!PHA response to CalRecyle Public Comment Period for SB 54 Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act Permanent Regulations

GO!PHA, a non-profit advocating for biodegradable materials like PHA, emphasizes the importance of a holistic environmental assessment in the PEIR to support a transition to a circular bioeconomy. Advocating for the use of renewable, bio-based materials that can replace conventional plastics and suggest various approaches and examples to address key environmental areas, such as air quality, soil health, and greenhouse gas emissions. The organization supports California's efforts to reduce plastic pollution and foster environmental sustainability, encouraging the adoption of innovative materials and technologies in alignment with broader environmental goals.

We encourage CalRecycle to recognize bio-based materials in its regulatory language and incentivize their development through favorable policies. This would promote market innovation, drive investment, and position California as a leader in sustainable materials adoption.

GO!PHA strongly supports CalRecycle’s efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote a circular economy through SB54. However, to fully realize these goals, it is essential that bio-based and compostable materials like PHAs are clearly recognized and integrated into the regulatory framework. By refining definitions, clarifying the role of compostable bioplastics, and investing in appropriate infrastructure, SB54 can pave the way for a more sustainable future.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide input on this critical legislation and stand ready to collaborate further in supporting the development of sustainable materials in California’s circular economy.
