GO!PHA Partners in ANIPH: Advancing PHA for Humanitarian Applications

GO!PHA is pleased to be a partner and collaborator in ANIPH (Avoiding the Negative Impacts produced by Plastic materials in Humanitarian contexts)—a new European Horizon 2025 project exploring PHA-based wound dressings and packaging for crisis situations. ANIPH’s primary focus is to develop wound dressings and flexible, water-resistant packaging made from PHBV, a type of PHA, offering a biodegradable alternative to single-use fossil-based plastics in war and natural disaster zones, where waste management is often a challenge.

Potential Impact:

✔ Up to 43% lower CO₂ emissions for packaging and 68% lower emissions for wound dressings compared to fossil-based alternatives

✔ Reducing reliance on 12,930 tonnes of hazardous substances

✔ Exploring ways to recirculate 1,475 tonnes of biomass

In addition to material innovation, ANIPH will also work on developing new standards and certification frameworksfor biobased and biodegradable materials, alongside public outreach and education efforts on these materials and their potential applications.

GO!PHA is proud to contribute its expertise in PHAs to this important initiative. We believe ANIPH represents a meaningful step forward in reducing plastic pollution in crisis zones. By introducing biodegradable PHA materials, the project aims to mitigate environmental harm and contribute to more sustainable humanitarian aid efforts. With its focus on circular economy principles, ANIPH seeks to create both immediate and long-term benefits for local communities while contributing to the global effort to reduce plastic pollution.
